Education activities review: November 21 – December 2

December 2, 2011

Pre-K TO 12th grade coastal science education

We hosted a class of 21 fifth and sixth grade students from Ninilchik last week for a Careers in Marine Science program.

There are no student Discovery Lab EE programs scheduled for December or January.

Public science & outdoor education

At this month’s public Discovery Lab – SpongeBob SquarePants Goes to School – attendees will meet the cast of real-life spineless marine creatures that inspires creators of this popular cartoon show and learn how salmon and other Alaska fish rely on and interact with them. Join us if you can next Wednesday, December 7th from 3 – 5 pm for this very fun event. We will have 5 or 6 student volunteers helping with this lab, our largest contingent of youth experts at one lab to date!

We already have 13 families interested in our February 11, 2012 Beyond BOW Family Ice Fishing Expedition to Encelewski Lake and have tentatively planned to lead an ice fishing expedition for a group of Girls Scouts in early February, as well. Local individuals are also starting to borrow ice fishing gear through our loaner program here at Islands & Ocean.

Education program planning

Education staff have been meeting periodically this fall to discuss the long-term direction of KBRR’s education programming. This week we were led through the logic model process of long-term planning by Megan; this very worthwhile and rewarding experience will help us refine what we do and plan to do down the road.

Our staff met with the Reserve’s education committee over dinner this week. We got great feedback from committee members on 1) revisions to teacher evaluations for our education programming and 2) how students are tested for STEM-related subjects in elementary and middle school (the latter topic being related to a grant proposal we’re working on).
