Education activities review: January 30 – February 3

February 5, 2012

Public education

Catie and Lee Post conducted two great Drawing Nature: Scientific Illustration Workshops last week. The adult workshop (a 3-hour event last Thursday evening) drew 16 eager artists of all abilities. The 3-day, 6-hour youth workshop drew 15 – 17 students each afternoon (10 youth attended all 3 workshop days). Participants were mostly from Homer, but a few came from Anchor Point and one family, attending both workshops, drove down on two days from Kenai. Copies of completed illustrations created by workshop attendees are now displayed in the Seminar Room here at Islands & Ocean. If you have a chance, stop by and see these wonderful examples of skills developed in the workshops by artists young and old.

This week’s Fish On! Fish & Fishing in Kachemak Bay Discovery Lab happened in the midst of the still-raging blizzard – 12 visitors braved the wet snow to learn about local sport fisheries, including halibut, rainbow through the ice, salmon, rockfish and more.

Thank you to ADF&G staff Barbi, Mike, and Cameron who joined us for this event.

K – 12th education

We have 10 school groups – with students in grades 3rd – 6th from Homer – scheduled for the month of February. Our Fish On! Discovery Labs start with students next week.

Program outreach

The Research Reserve’s inaugural issue of Pulse of the Bay – our electronic, quarterly newsletter – went out to over 400 individuals this week! Hopefully you received this and can share it with folks you know who might be interested in the Research Reserve and our activities. If you know someone who would like to subscribe to receive these in the future, they can contact Terry at terry.thompson@alaska.gov.
