Education activities review: September 24-28

This is the Reserve’s 300th Friday Feedback, an almost weekly update that some of you have been receiving since its inception on December 5, 2003! We hope these recaps of our education/outreach-related activities have been interesting and worthwhile reading over the years.

Student science education

We will be providing offsite salmon ecology education programs to the approximately 200 students attending Homer Middle School and several classes of high school students at Homer High School in November. Our staff are in the process of booking these in-classroom programs and developing the lesson plans and activities for each grade level.

Public education programs

We’ve been finalizing event details and updating various calendars, websites, and outreach materials this week. Here is a calendar of activities you might want to join us for this fall and winter:

  • Thursday, Oct. 11: Nature Rocks Homer Fall Meeting 3-5pm at Islands & Ocean
  • Friday, Nov. 9: KBEEA semi-annual meeting 9am-2pm at Islands & Ocean
  • Saturday, Nov. 10: Nature Rocks Homer booth at the Rotary Health Fair 7:30am-1:00pm at Homer High School
  • Wednesday, Dec. 5: Monitoring Kachemak Bay Discovery Lab 3-5pm at Islands & Ocean
    (earlier this day is the KBRR Community Council meeting from 12 – 3pm)
  • Thursday, Dec. 27: 4th annual Ice Fishing Clinic (this will also be KBRR’s Grow An Angler Program’s kick-off event) 3:00-4:30pm at Islands & Ocean
  • Wednesday, Feb. 6: Surveying Southcentral Alaska’s Seabirds & Marine Mammals Discovery Lab 3-5pm at Islands & Ocean
  • Saturday, Feb. 23: 3rd annual Family Ice Fishing Expedition to Encelewski Lake (registration required) 8am-2pm Homer to Encelewski Lake to fish for rainbow trout
