Carmen provided a Careers in Marine Science program in the lab classroom this week for 25 sixth to twelfth grade students from Razdolna School.

We have scheduled Alaska’s Coastal Birds & Marine Mammals Discovery Lab programming in all 3 communities on Kachemak Bay’s south side for next April. Full days of activities will happen on April 22nd at Port Graham School, April 22nd at Nanwalek School, and April 29th at Susan B. English School in Seldovia.

Public education programs

Please join KBRR staff for a fun, informative Ice Fishing Clinic in our lab classroom next Thursday, Dec. 27th from 3:00 – 4:30pm. This will be our 4th annual ice fishing lab, in which area residents can learn all about this fun and interesting sport—from what kind of gear one needs to which local lakes have the best fishing. Skills taught in this lab will prepare attendees for an Alaskan ice fishing experience. Note: A Homer family borrowed ice fishing gear from us last weekend and managed to haul in a giant rainbow trout on their first ice fishing adventure!

Since we’re talking about fishing, here’s an end-of-year reminder that 2012 fishing licenses will expire Dec. 31st. So, if you’re looking for a last-minute holiday gift to surprise the fishermen in your family, consider buying them 2013 fishing licenses. It’s easy—just go to the AK Dept. of Fish & Game website and click on the link within the text to begin the online purchase process. A resident sportfishing license costs $24.00. Residents under the age of 16 do not need to purchase a sportfishing or trapping license.
