Education activities review: December 24-28

December 28, 2012

Public education programs

This week’s Ice Fishing Clinic lab was postponed yesterday due to icy road conditions and attended today by 56 people of all ages. Several folks new to town came in to learn where to go, what gear people use up here (some had ice fished in Wisconsin and Minnesota before), and what the catch limits are. Several families signed up for our Feb. 23rd fishing trip to Johnson Lake (we’re almost at our capacity for this event – yea!) and two brothers borrowed gear and were going to fish all weekend. One little girl shared with us that she’d bought her dad a jigging rod for Christmas – after fishing with us last February at Encelewski Lake. J

We’ve had another fun and very successful year of public Discovery Lab programming. In 2012 we offered 22 public labs, averaging 101 visitors at each event (and 121 per lab during the summer) – these 22 labs were attended by 2,225 visitors! A big thanks goes out to all our 2012 volunteers and community partners, without whom we wouldn’t have such a great Discovery Lab program!

Ice fishing gear loaner program

Just a reminder—you can borrow ice fishing gear all winter from us at no cost here at the Kachemak Bay Research Reserve and the AK Islands & Ocean Visitor Center.

Gear that can be borrowed:
• Hand/manual ice auger
• Ice fishing jigging rods
• Ice ladle
• Ice fishing tackle box w/ lures & bobbers
• Ice fishing tip-up

Requirements for borrowing:
Only adults (with or without families) living in the Homer/Anchor Point area may borrow ice fishing gear. There is no fee for borrowing this gear…all one needs is a driver’s license so staff can record this on the check-out form.*
*Borrowers – if gear is lost or severely damaged, you are responsible for replacing the gear.

Please remember that anyone over 16 years old fishing with this gear will need to have a current Alaska fishing license.

Borrowing limits:
Families can check out up to 6 jigging rods, 1 ice auger, 2 ladles & 1 tackle box at a time for up to 3 days or over a weekend (which would include Mondays, since the Visitor Center is closed on Mondays).

Happy Fishing!
