Education activities review: Feb. 1-8

February 8, 2013

Public programs

This week’s Alaska’s Coastal Birds & Marine Mammals Discovery Lab was attended by 66 visitors of all ages. This lab, funded by the Ocean Alaska Science & Learning Center, featured fascinating facts, specimens, and research project summaries for local seabirds, black oystercatchers, bald eagles, sea otters, whales, and harbor seals.

We so appreciate being able to borrow specimens for this lab, as well as for upcoming student labs, from the Pratt Museum, UAA-KPC/Kachemak Bay Campus biology professor Debbie Tobin, AK Maritime NWR, and Jason Herreman at ADF&G! A big thanks also goes out to FWS colleagues Leslie Slater and Joel Vos and volunteers Carole Demers, Martha Briscoe, and Tadhg Scholz for being lab station experts at this lab!

A reminder, next Wednesday is our Roadmap for Adapting to Climate Change CTP workshop from 9:00am – 12:30pm. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to contact Stacey here at the Reserve to register for this free session.

Student education programs

Our Alaska’s Coastal Birds & Marine Mammals Discovery Labs for students begin next week. We’ll be hosting about 175 preschool – 5th grade students from Homer over the next 2 weeks.
