Kachemak Bay NERR: Pulse of the Bay fall 2014 newsletter

December 16, 2014

While December in Homer brings only 6 hours of light per day, things are not sleepy here at the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve! Take a moment to read our fall newsletter (click here) and learn more about all of our activity.

In this issue, we highlight some of the various products developed by KBNERR to improve coastal stewardship. These include tools to better understand glacial retreat, the physical characteristics of Kachemak Bay’s shoreline, landscape linkages to juvenile salmon rearing habitat, and local weather dynamics. We also spotlight numerous identification guides and resources valuable to educators and the local community.

Change abounds as KBNERR begins the journey of our fiscal departure from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game – Sport Fish Division to a new state partner within the University of Alaska, Anchorage (UAA). In the next few weeks, we anticipate a Memorandum of Agreement that will spell out the framework for our transition, which we expect to complete by July 1, 2015. In the months to come, we look forward to re-envisioning ourselves under UAA’s broad and complementary mission. And, to add interest to an already widening horizon, Kachemak Bay was selected in November as a Habitat Focus Area for NOAA’s Habitat Blueprint!

From all of us here at KBNERR, we send best wishes for a joyous holiday season.
